Bicycles come in many types, make, materials and sizes. All of these varieties are made to meet the different needs by different users. The types of the bike are categorized into major items, such as road bikes and mountain bikes, and hybrid bikes which are the combination of road and mountain bikes. Depending on the need of the rider, a bike is essentially shaped and built to match the road type. A road bicycle is of course for ridden on a flat road, so the weight and geometry of the frame does not really get attention from the bikers. On the other hand, a mountain bike is to be used on a rugged terrain, making it built in certain geometry for good balance and sturdiness. Some bikers prefer it light so that it will be easy to lift on difficult ground topography. Some others opt for a sturdy structure for stable riding. All in all, it depends on the bikers’ preference for some reasons.
Materials for the frame also range from aluminum, steel, titanium and carbon fiber. Steel bicycle frame is generally heavier yet sturdier so it is not suitable for those who prefer light mountain bike. Steel frame is mostly used for road runner for its stability in its frame structure. Many bikers who have heavy built prefer this material in the tube because of the sturdiness. Aluminum, on the other hand, is usually less heavy compared to the steel material. However, the more expensive steel framed bike could be lighter than aluminum bicycle. Titanium is likely to be the most highly priced among other materials. It is lightweight, strong, and resistant to corrosion, so it is no wonder that it is expensive. Bicycle frames made of carbon fiber are said to be less durable than those made of titanium although the price is comparable to the titanium frame.
